How to Perform Hajj

By Shaykh Muhammad

Types of Hajj

The Three Types of Hajj

There are three types of Hajj:

1. Hajj Qiraan

In Hajj Qiraan, the pilgrim enters the state of ihraam with the intention of performing both Umrah and Hajj together. Only one ihraam is required for both acts of worship. After arriving in Makkah, the pilgrim performs Umrah first and then completes the rites of Hajj without leaving the state of ihraam. The ihraam is maintained until all the Hajj rituals are completed.

2. Hajj Tamattu’

In Hajj Tamattu’, the pilgrim enters the state of ihraam with the intention of performing Umrah only. After completing the Umrah rituals, the ihraam is removed, allowing the pilgrim to remain out of ihraam until the Hajj begins. Before 8th Zul Hijjah, the pilgrim enters a new state of ihraam with the intention of performing Hajj.

3. Hajj Ifraad

In Hajj Ifraad, the pilgrim enters the state of ihraam with the intention of performing Hajj only. Umrah is not combined with this type of Hajj. Once the pilgrim enters the state of ihraam, he remains under its restrictions until all the Hajj rituals have been completed.

Note on Ihraam

According to Sharee’ah, ihraam is a sacred state in which certain halaal (lawful) acts become prohibited for a pilgrim, such as using perfume, trimming or shaving hair, and other restrictions. A person enters this state by wearing two unstitched white sheets (for men), making the niyyah (intention) for Hajj or Umrah, and reciting the talbiyah. Women remain in their normal modest Islamic clothing. The two white sheets worn by a male pilgrim are also commonly referred to as ihraam. Some people mistakenly believe that once these garments are worn, they cannot be removed. This is incorrect. A pilgrim may change or wash the ihraam garments whenever necessary without leaving the state of ihraam. The state of ihraam ends only after completing the required rites of Hajj or Umrah.

“Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of pleasing Allah, avoiding all indecent speech and sinful actions, will return as free from sin as the day his mother gave birth to him.”

Bukhaari, Muslim — Aboo Hurayrah radhiyallahu anhu

“There is no day on which Allah sets free more souls from the Fire than the Day of Arafah. On that day, Allah draws near and, expressing His pride to the angels, says: ‘What do these servants of Mine desire?'”

Sahih Muslim Narrated by Aishah (رضي الله عنها)

Instructions by Type of Hajj

Instructions by Type of Hajj

Select your type of Hajj below to view the preparation steps before the five days of Hajj begin. Where applicable, refer to the

guide for detailed instructions on ihraam, tawaaf, and sa’ee.

If You Are Performing Hajj Qiraan

1

You will enter the state of ihraam with the intention of performing both Umrah and Hajj on or before reaching Meeqaat. Study and follow the section on ihraam in the guide.

However, make sure you make intention of both Umrah and Hajj.

2

On reaching Makkah, make necessary arrangements and go to Al Masjidul Haraam and perform Umrah (i.e. tawaaf and sa’ee). Study and follow the section on tawaaf and sa’ee in the guide

3

After completing sa’ee, perform a second tawaaf. This second tawaaf is tawaafe qudoom which is Sunnah.

4

Now perform sa’ee once again. This is the sa’ee for Hajj

5

Now remain in Makkah Mukarramah in the state of ihraam. You will not adopt another ihraam for Hajj.

6

Turn to Tab 2 — “Before 8th Zul Hijjah” — and follow the guidelines for the five days of Hajj.

Mas’alah

Do not shave or trim after sa’ee.

Mas’alah

If you are going to perform sa’ee of Hajj after tawaafe qudoom, then this tawaaf will be performed with idhtibaa in all seven rounds and ramal in the first three rounds only.

Mas’alah

Sa’ee of Hajj can be performed after tawaafe ziyaarat too, but for those performing Hajj Qiraan, it is more preferable and better to perform it after tawaafe qudoom.
